Event Description:
Native American family program Families will learn about Native American life on Cape Cod before the Pilgrims in a hands-on summer program. Marcus Hendricks of the Nipmuc-Wampanoag community will lead the programs on Tuesdays and Thursdays from late June to early August at a reconstructed wetu at the Historical Society of Old Yarmouth off Route 6A in Yarmouth Port. On Tuesdays, children will learn about the daily life in a wetu and do a craft with wampum. They will also go on a guided walk on the Thacher Trail. Thursday programs will explore how hunting and fishing provided Native families with food and clothing. There will be Native American artifacts, tribal music and storytelling. The programs are for children ages 8-10, grades 3 and 4, and must be with their parents throughout the programs. Each session is limited to 15 children. Tuesday dates are June 21, July 5 and 19 and Aug. 2. Thursdays are June 23, July and 21 and Aug. 4. Cost is $15 per child. Payments also can be made in person at the Historical Society’s office next to the Yarmouth Port Post Office on Tuesdays or Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Programs will be held rain or shine. Water and juice will be provided and a restroom is available. The trail is not wheelchair accessible but the wetu is accessible for participants.
